Custom Orthotics

Improve Foot Efficiency and Reduce Pain & Discomfort!

Why You May Need Orthotics:

If you have been experiencing foot, knee or hip pain without any recollection of injury, chances are that the biomechanics of the feet may be contributing to the symptoms.

Podiatrists are clinical experts in assessing the foot mechanics and are trained to diagnose certain conditions that will require customised orthotics.

Foot orthotics, also called orthoses, are devices designed to improve the efficiency of foot function and lower leg mechanics.

They are then placed into your shoes and work by restoring the foot’s normal arch and alignment.

Biomechanical faults in the foot are common contributors towards foot and ankle pain and you should consult with a podiatrist for further advice on appropriate treatment using orthotics.

Most common conditions that podiatrists treat with orthotics include:

Types of Orthotics

1. Off The Shelf Orthotics:

The off the shelf orthotics can be found in your local chemists through a variety of orthotic brands.

These types of orthotics are usually generic and are made to fit the majority of the feet.

Even though these orthotics can be supportive in the initial weeks, they tend to wear out soon, resulting in loss of support for the foot.

Moreover, these options may benefit people with minimal symptoms and more severe symptoms will require customised orthotics prescribed by your podiatrist.

2. Customised Orthotics: Our Process

Custom fitting orthotics are tailor-made for an individual after a comprehensive assessment of the foot by the podiatrist. It is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach like with off-the-shelf orthotics.

The detail by which the assessment and the design of the orthotics are done ensures that they last for many years without undergoing major wear and tear.

This ensures that the foot is constantly supported while walking or running.

Assessment and prescription for custom orthotics require the following steps:

Sporthealth Physio Process

Assessment

As the first step, the podiatrist will undertake a comprehensive biomechanical and gait assessment of the lower leg and foot.

A thorough examination is essential for an accurate diagnosis for custom orthotic prescription.

During the assessment the podiatrist will look at the way you walk and the way your foot functions during the entire walking cycle.

This gives the podiatrist important information to help formulate the custom orthotic prescription such as:

Orthotic Selection

Once the podiatrist has completed the assessment, they will prescribe the appropriate orthotics according to your clinical needs.

The customised orthotics are designed to address the biomechanical faults that are diagnosed during the assessment with the aim to minimise your symptoms and pain.

Orthotic Fitting

Once the orthotics have been custom designed and completed, the podiatrist will assist you in fitting them into the shoes of your choice.

Orthotic Review

Approximately 4-6 weeks after the initial consultation with the podiatrist, you will be required to come in for a review and assessment.

This is an important consultation as it allows the podiatrists to know how your foot and lower leg are functioning with your new orthotics.

The podiatrist can assess whether the orthotics are helping you function as they should or make any adjustments if needed.

Your walking gait is analysed while wearing your orthotics and any necessary modifications are made during the appointment.

Ongoing self-management protocols such as stretching and strengthening exercises will also be prescribed to help prevent future problems.
